Jakarta City Planning Gallery opened

Jakarta(The Jakarta Post)-Governor Fauzi Bowo on Friday officiated the Rp 3 billion (US$321,027) City Planning Gallery, which shows the inclusion of a monorail line and Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, but lacks detail on several mayoralties.

Fauzi said the launch, at the City Spatial Agency on Jl. Abdul Muis, Central Jakarta, was part of the familiarization of the 2030 Spatial Plan draft that was submitted to the City Council December last year.

"To attract public interest, access to the Spatial Plan has been made available through a variety of mediums, including the Internet.

"But if people want to see the model, they have to go to the City Spatial Agency," he said.

The costly 144-square-meter gallery at the third floor of the agency complex, however, still lacks models of East, West and North Jakarta's spatial planning.

Head of the City Spatial Agency, Wiriyatmoko, said the main 8 x 4 meter maquette could not show detailed descriptions for each of the five municipalities due to limited space.

The main model only displays the planning of Central Jakarta and South Jakarta, including the city's main thoroughfares of Jl. Sudirman and Jl. Thamrin, the National Monument Park and Jl. M.T. Haryono.

The model also shows the first phase of the MRT system that runs from Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to Dukuh Atas and the monorail track that passes Jl. Asia Afrika.

Wiriyatmoko said his office has prepared the gallery over the last two years, spending Rp 3 billion of the city budget.

The gallery showcases the city's spatial plan in 2030, images of the city since 1965 and those of the future plan.

It consists of a 32-square-meter main model and four smaller models, five television monitors and six personal computers that contain information about city planning.

Besides the gallery, there are two other rooms; a discussion room for 40 people and a library that displays books on spatial plans and architecture.

The pictures and monitors depict Jakarta and its draft plan in four phases: 1965-1985, 1985-2005, 2005-2010 and 2010-2030.

"It's actually a temporary gallery, once we find a bigger space we will move the gallery," Fauzi said.

The governor said he welcomed the public's input for the 2030 Spatial Plan draft and hoped comments would be submitted soon.

He added he asked his subordinates to upload 3 dimensional pictures of the model to the official website.

"I want the information in the website and the miniature model to be updated as soon as there are changes," he said, adding he also wanted the information on building permits to be uploaded to the website www.rtrwjakarta2030.com.

The gallery is open to the public every day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for free.

Kapan Busway Koridor IX Dan X Beroperasi?

Jakarta, Timor Leste to cooperate in small enterprises development

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and neighboring Timor Leste have formed a Joint Coordination Committee responsible for development of cooperatives, small and medium enterprises (CSMEs)in the two countries.

"The Joint Coordination Committee`s function is discussing and developing cooperation possibilities in the cooperatives, small and medium enterprises sector that can lead to the conclusion of pertinent accords," Cooperatives,d Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Sjarifuddin Hasan here on Wednesday.

He said the committee was formed on the basis of a joint agreement of the two countries on development of cooperatives, small and medium enterprises.

Sjarifuddin said the Joint Coordination Committee would be tasked to coordinate and monitor the implementation of follow-up programs and to consider the issues from the joint interest related to Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (KUKM) between the tow countries.

"The Committee will then periodically report to the related ministers who are responsible in the KUKM development," Sjarifuddin said.

He added that the Committee would meet once a year either in Indonesia or Timor Leste.

Earlier in the day here, Sjarifuddin and Timor Leste Minister for Economy and Development Joao Mendes Goncalves signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in cooperatives and small and medium enterprises.

The cooperation would among other things cover information exchange on KUKM development policy program, national and international trade promotion, special exhibitions, trade cooperation, and creation of business partnership.

It also covers various KUKM opportunities to participate in trainings on managerial skills in technical field, and formal education on cooperative management field.

Both parties would also support each other to facilitate bilateral symposiums, seminars, conferences, workshops, and KUKM representative meetings, besides facilitating and supporting KUKMs to open market access in the two countries and other potential countries.

Fly Over Tubagus Angke Mulai Dikerjakan

Avatar smashes Chinese all-time box-office record

Only in 3D … Chinese moviegoers watch Avatar in a cinema in Hefei, in Anhui province. According to news reports, Chinese cinemas will stop showing the 2D version of the film from 23 January. Photograph: STR/AFP/Getty Images

guardian.co.uk(Ben Child)-It would appear to be a case of shutting the door after the big blue alien has bolted. If, as has been reported, censors move to scale back Avatar's Chinese run later this week due to fears it could cause unrest, they will do so in the knowledge that James Cameron's sci-fi megalith has already been seen in cinemas by unprecedented numbers in the world's most populous nation.

Studio Twentieth Century Fox reported yesterday that the film had smashed the all-time Chinese box-office record with a haul of $73.2m (£44.6m) after just two weeks of screenings. That moves it past the $63m taken by previous box-office champion 2012 as recently as last month: the Chinese record is falling on a regular basis due to huge increases in the number of cinema screens in the country.

The Hollywood Reporter said many in the north of China braved freezing temperatures at the weekend to pay around 80 yuan (£7) for tickets, though in some cases touts were reportedly selling them for up to 300 yuan (£27). Not that they'll have much more opportunity – Chinese media, in particular Hong Kong's Apple Daily, have reported that the state-run China Film Group has ordered cinemas across the country to only show the 3D edition of the film and stop showing the 2D version from 23 January, effectively preventing its general distribution.

Parallels had been drawn between the plight of the Na'vi, who face the threat of eviction from their woodland home in Cameron's blockbuster, and those in China vulnerable to displacement by predatory property developers. Reports suggested Avatar would be replaced with screenings of a patriotic biopic on the life of Confucius.

China's box office is still small compared with North America's, but the country is a growing marketplace for Hollywood films. That growth is hampered, however, by a ruling that only 20 foreign movies can be imported into cinemas each year. Cameron himself visited Beijing in December as part of Avatar's press tour, calling on the Chinese government to end the restriction, which is also being challenged by the World Trade Organisation.

Avatar currently stands at No 2 in the all-time global box-office chart, behind Cameron's own Titanic, with $1.6bn. It is likely to overtake its predecessor's $1.842bn worldwide tally within two weeks to become the highest grossing release in history, unadjusted for inflation.

Meanwhile, a 42-year-old Taiwanese man with a history of high blood pressure has died of a stroke likely triggered by over-excitement from watching Avatar in 3D, according to the AFP press agency. The man, who suffered from hypertension, started to feel unwell during a screening earlier this month in the northern city of Hsinchu, and was taken to hospital. He died 11 days later from a brain haemorrhage. "It's likely that the over-excitement from watching the movie triggered his symptoms," said emergency room doctor Peng Chin-chih.

China gives first response to Google threat

Jakarta(BBC News)-China has said that foreign internet firms are welcome to do business there "according to the law".

The statement, from Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu, is Beijing's first response to Google's threat to stop filtering content in China. Google said cyber-attacks originating in China aimed at rights activists, and increased web censorship, might force it to end its China operations.

Ms Jiang insisted the internet was "open" in China. Google announced late on Tuesday that it was no longer willing to censor its Chinese search engine - google.cn.

The search engine said it would hold talks with the government in the coming weeks to look at operating an unfiltered search engine within the law in the country, though no changes to filtering have yet been made.

'Holding statement'

At a regular foreign ministry news briefing, Ms Jiang said: "China like other countries administers the internet according to law. "China's internet is open, and the Chinese government encourages development of the internet." She was responding to a reporter's question on Google and US concerns about the business environment in China in light of Google's reported cyber-attacks. "Chinese law proscribes any form of hacking activity," she said.

When Google launched google.cn in 2006, it agreed to censor some search results - such as the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, Tibetan independence or Falun Gong - as required by the Chinese government.

The BBC's Chris Hogg in Shanghai says Ms Jiang's comments sound like a holding statement, until officials can have talks with Google. Google currently holds about one-third of the Chinese search market, far behind Chinese rival Baidu, which has more than 60%. China has more internet users - about 350 million - than any other country and provides a lucrative search engine market worth an estimated $1bn (£614m) last year.

It is difficult to see how the situation can be resolved, our correspondent says, with Google potentially losing its market share and the government reluctant to give up its right to control the internet.

'Don't be evil'

In a blog posted late on Tuesday, Google's chief legal officer David Drummond announced "A new approach to China". He said the accounts of dozens of US, China and Europe-based users of its Gmail service who are advocates of human rights in China had been "routinely accessed by third parties".

At least 20 other large companies from a wide range of businesses were similarly targeted, it added.
Google's decision to concede to China's demands on censorship in 2006 led to accusations it had betrayed its company motto - "don't be evil" - but Google argued it would be more damaging for civil liberties if it pulled out of China entirely.

Google's stance has drawn mixed reaction from China's internet community. Some have applauded what they see as a bold stand against the country's internet guardians while others expressed fears they would lose a valued source of news, despite it being censored.

Others saw the Google statement as a Chinese victory, saying that Google's withdrawal from the country would be no great loss, with Baidu providing almost all the same services as google.cn.

The state-run China Daily described Google's statement as designed to put pressure on the Chinese government.

Youthink! International Youth Day Essay Contest

Jakarta(confuzzled.blogsome.com)-1st place: Lusia Nini Purwajati, 23, Indonesia
Lusia combined lively personal anecdotes with a wider look at how our attitudes can help shape our planet's future. Congrats, Lusia!

"Dare to be Uncool: Don't Let Our Earth Die Before Our Eyes"

By walking or cycling maybe we need 15 minutes more to get to school, but we can extend the age of our Earth.
  —Lusia Nini Purwajati, 23, Indonesia

Advance of Technology

Life has never been easier. With the advance of technology, now people can do things which were impossible in the past. Motor vehicles help us commute, and trains and airplanes even more so. In daily life, the advent of plastic diapers helps mothers and fathers; their sleep isn't bothered with having to change their babies' cloth diapers frequently.

Too Much

Technology really helps us, but in my opinion the use of it is sometimes too much. Here is one example from my neighborhood: I saw my teen neighbor going to a local shop by motorcycle. And how far is her house from the shop? Only 300 meters! She only bought one pack of instant noodles and also got a black plastic bag for free. Since she used her motorcycle, she needed the plastic bag because she couldn't hold the noodles while driving. So, the plastic bag with its carrying handler became the solution. If she had chosen to walk to the shop, she wouldn't have needed the plastic bag, as she could have carried the noodles in her hand.

This little example shows that technology is sometimes inappropriate, and too much. We become dependent on it for simple tasks and worse, we become lazy. Moreover, we human beings are consuming too much, and this consumption is unsustainable. Humanity is consuming over 20% more natural resources each year than the Earth can produce.1

Yes, it makes our life easier right now. But imagine a few years from now. Higher pollution, more waste, and decreasing green areas will make our Earth die. As youth, of course we still want to do a lot of things, and fulfill our dreams. But maybe our Earth will die before our eyes. And maybe we'll have no time to reach our dreams.

Following the Trend

I cried in middle school when my parents didn't allow me to ride a motorcycle. The age limit to drive a motorcycle in my country, Indonesia, is 16; of course I was still around 13 or 14 at that time. But all of my friends were allowed to ride a motorcycle, their parent even made them fake driving licenses! I'm left, I'm the uncool one. I was using the bus back then.

During college (and until now), I always brought my own water bottle everywhere. One day, another neighbor who was still 12 years old found about my habit. She commented, "You bring a bottle every day? Ah, just like a kindergarten student!!" Again, I'm the uncool one, even for a preteen kid.

I survived my adolescence with being uncool and now I'm thankful for that. But, I remember back then it was quite hard, seeing my friends could do what I couldn't do.

According to Erikson development stage2, age 12–20, or adolescence, is the stage where the adolescent is concerned with how he or she appears to others. If they don't follow the trend, they will be the uncool kid. Their appearance is their identity and of course they want to be the coolest kid among others. During those ages, the adolescent is also easily influenced by peer pressure.

Unfortunately, what is trendy usually is something that they actually don't need. Unnecessary consumption can have big consequences in the future as shown from my neighbor's attitude mentioned before. Adolescent youth should aware of the long-term consequences of their actions, in order to survive and reach their dreams in the future.

Make it Simple and Start from Small Things

So what should we do for the sustainability of our earth? The solution is simple. Probably we don't even need new technologies that are environment friendly. I'm not underestimating new technology such as bio-fuels or solar powered vehicles. But in many cases, the solution is already there, and has been practiced since long before.

Let us go back to the good old days. The era when we used bicycles or brought our own bag or case when going shopping. The era when we wanted—or needed, since it was the only way at that time—to work out a little bit more than now when doing something. By walking or cycling maybe we need 15 minutes more to get to school, but we can extend the age of our Earth. Think about the future, think about sustainability.

And how to start? Start from the small things. For example, bring your own bottle. With this tiny little "green" habit at least we can reduce the daily consumption of plastic bottles. Next, find some friends that share the same awareness. It doesn't matter if there is only one such friend in the beginning. At least there are two to support each other. Like I mentioned before, during adolescence, peer pressure is something we can't ignore. When other people see that we are "weird," we need to have someone else to share our feelings and experiences.

Also, we can't expect to change our surroundings drastically, or for everyone to follow our way. Start from the small things, and make it happen slowly but surely. We can make people around us aware of our "green" habits; show them that "this way" is also working. And then start to influence them. Introduce them casually to the risks the Earth is facing now. The same way they are influenced by peer pressure to follow the trend. We can make the "uncool" become the new trend.

So, let's dare to be uncool for our Earth. We still young. Don't let our Earth die before our eyes.

Suporter tersebut segera diamankan polisi.Tidak diketahui motif sesungguhnya apa yang mengakibatkan seorang suporter bertindak seperti itu. Obituary: Abdurrahman Wahid

Jakarta(BBC News)- Abdurrahman Wahid, who has died at the age of 69, was one of the most formidable and colourful figures in Indonesian political and religious life.

Wahid, or Gus Dur as he was also known, was born in Jombang, East Java in 1940, the first of five children in a prominent and politically active Muslim family.

His paternal grandfather was the founder of Indonesia's largest Muslim organisation, the Nahdlatul Ulama, or NU, while his father Wahid Hasyim would go on to be Indonesia's first minister of religious affairs.

The family moved to Jakarta in 1944 where Wahid attended school and was encouraged by his father to read non-Muslim books and newspapers to broaden his horizons.

Studies abroad

He returned to Jombang to attend Muslim school in 1959, where he began work as a teacher and later as a headmaster, and in 1963 received a scholarship to study at al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt.

He continued his studies in the Iraqi capital Baghdad and later in the Netherlands, and eventually returned to Indonesia in 1971, where he worked as a journalist and social commentator, and later as an academic.

In the late 1970s Wahid began to play an active role in the running of the NU - which draws its support of at least 30 million members from Muslims in the rural areas of Java - seeing himself as a reformer of the organisation.

At this time he also had his first political experience, campaigning for the United Development Party, PPP, a Muslim party which was formed as a result of a merger of four Muslim parties including NU.

He became chairman of NU in 1984, but consistently maintained that government should be secular and that faith is a personal matter.

'Kingmaker'

However his position as a moral leader was transformed following the dramatic fall of President Suharto in 1998.
In the ensuing unrest, some politicians made increasingly vocal calls for Islam to have an institutionalised role in the state.

Although health problems, especially poor eyesight, limited his effectiveness, Wahid's position as chairman of NU placed him in the role of "kingmaker" following Suharto's downfall.

Wahid and his supporters formed the National Awakening Party, PKB, and after months of prevarication over whether he would actually stand, Wahid was officially declared as presidential candidate in February 1999.

His election as president, in October 1999, came as a shock to many after Megawati Sukarnoputri's PDI-P party had emerged as the winner of Indonesia's parliamentary elections in June that year.

He was seen as a reformer and democrat as well as a man who could unite the country after the chaos surrounding the downfall of Suharto and his authoritarian regime.

Host of problems

But the transition to democracy was never going to be easy and President Wahid's honeymoon was short-lived.

He got off to a good start by curbing the influence of the military over his government.

Against great odds he succeeded in sacking the former armed forces chief and man accused of instigating the destruction of East Timor, General Wiranto.

He also moved early on issues such as the liberalisation of Chinese cultural and religious expression and the release of political prisoners.

He explored trade relations with Israel and agreed a memorandum of understanding, albeit briefly, with the separatist movement in the Sumatran province of Aceh.

But he soon ran into a host of problems, some of them self-made.

Despite a flare-up of sectarian and separatist violence across the country, Mr Wahid embarked on a series of long trips abroad, seeming to ignore problems back home.

His style of leadership soon appeared erratic and unfocused and in particular without any emphasis on the critical issue of economic recovery.

Political isolation

But perhaps his most controversial move was the sacking of two senior ministers from the cabinet without any proper explanation.

This also exposed the weakness of his coalition government as the main parties on whose support he depended began to turn against him.

Wahid's presidency ultimately collapsed following unproven allegations of corruption. One of the allegations involved the theft of $4.1m from the national food agency by people claiming to be acting on his behalf.

He was impeached by the Indonesian parliament in July 2001, and replaced by his deputy, Megawati Sukarnoputri.

Less than two years after his election, he was a politically isolated man, whose inability to govern rendered him an almost pathetic figure who refused to leave the palace despite being replaced by parliament.

In recent years he had suffered several strokes, kidney problems and was nearly blind.

He remained an influential figure in Indonesian politics, and a staunch defender of secular politics and moderate Islam.
