Jakarta (Djakarta News – The Jakarta Post)-Hundreds of Jakarta residents gathered Sunday in front of the Japanese Embassy to support the nation as it recovers from a recent magnitude 9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunami.
Residents placed their handprints, wrote well-wishes and signed their names inside a red circle representing Japan’s flag.
“This is from Indonesians giving moral support to Japan. We are also supported by the Japanese Embassy. Dozens of institutions are gathered here today but they are shun their identifying markers for Japan,” Hani, the coordinator for Indonesia For Japan said, as quoted by tribunnews.com. Hani said Japan had helped Indonesia during the 2004 Aceh tsunami.
“Now, with the earthquake in Japan we pooled humanitarian funds three hours after it occurred,” Hani said.
The event featured art from both countries and participants sang songs such as "We are the World" and "Bengawan Solo", an Indonesian keroncong song once favored by Japanese.
The event aimed for 10,000 signatures. The newswire reported that Japan Ambassador to Indonesia Kojiro Shiojiri and Presidential Work Unit for Development Monitoring and Controls (UKP4) chief Kuntoro Mangkusubroto were present at the event.
