Jakarta  (RRI – Djakarta News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono installed Admiral Agus Suhartono as the new commander of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) at the State Palace here on Tuesday. The president and Vice President Boediono arrived at the installation scene at 3 pm.  A number of high state officials were also present, among others Chairman of the People`s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Taufik Kiemas, Constitutional Court Chairman Mahfud MD, State Audit Board (BPK) Chairman Hadi Poernomo and leaders of the House of Representatives (DPR).

The installation ceremony began with the reading of presidential decrees No. 51/TNI/2010 on the appointment of Agus Suhartono as TNI chief and No.52/TNI/2010 on the appointment of Vice Admiral Soeparno as the Navy chief.  The two new TNI leaders then had their oath taken by President Yudhoyono. On Monday, the House of Representatives (DPR) approved the appointment of Admiral Agus Suhartono to become the next chief of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) as proposed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Chairman of the House`s Commission I Mahfudz Sidik earlier submitted the report about the fit-and-proper test result.

After the test, members of the Commission I in their meeting agreed to approve the appointment of the admiral as proposed by the head of state, and to replace outgoing TNI Chief General Djoko Santoso. The test had particularly focused on priorities to be carried out by the next TNI chief, namely military reform, more exact strategy to meet essential forces, promoting the TNI budget including for the welfare of soldiers, strengthening TNI presence in maritime border areas and areas where separatism is still rampant, Sidik said.
