Pasar Tradisional vs Pasar Modern

    * Lindeteves Trade Center (LTC-Glodok)
    * ITC Permata Hijau
    * ITC Roxy Mas
    * Lokasari Plaza
    * Mall Ciputra (d/h Citraland Mall)
    * Mall Daan Mogot

    * Harco Mas Mangga Dua
    * Kelapa Gading Trade Center
    * La Piazza

    * Kelapa Gading Hypermall

Indonesia leader says charges should be dropped in row

Jakarta (BBC News) - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has said two officials at the centre of a high level corruption scandal should not face trial. The president said the case, which caused public outrage when it emerged the two could have been framed, should be settled out of court.

The scandal has pitted the country's anti-corruption agency against senior law enforcement officials. Anti-corruption activists criticised the president's announcement. He needed to go further to prove he was serious about clamping down on corruption, they said.

In his televised speech to the nation, the president said the two officials should not face trial so "the image of Indonesia in the eyes of the world improves". But he also said he could not interfere with the investigations.

Frequent protests

The BBC's Karishma Vaswani reports from Jakarta there had been high hopes that what the president said would draw a line under the ongoing corruption scandal that has transfixed the nation. But instead it raised even more questions about his commitment to root out graft in this country, she says.
An independent inquiry had already recommended that the police case against two anti-corruption officials accused of extortion and abuse of power should be dropped.

The two men - Bibit Samad Rianto and Chandra Hamzah - have been released, but the police and the attorney general's office have so far refused to drop their case. Public sympathy has been growing for the anti-corruption agency - known by its acronym KPK - with almost daily protests on the streets of Jakarta urging the president to act decisively.

Indonesians do not have much faith in many of their institutions, like the police force or the judiciary, but the KPK is one thing many of them do believe in, our correspondent says. She says they see the case against the two KPK men as an outrageous injustice - an attempt by Indonesia's police to weaken the powerful agency, which has earned itself a reputation for putting corrupt officials behind bars, even those in high places.

The alleged conspiracy against the KPK was revealed in wiretaps played in court earlier this month, in which senior officials from the national police and the attorney general's office discussed plans to undermine the agency.

President Yudhoyono has been under pressure to come up with a solution to this problem, with mounting criticism that he has been slow to act. He was re-elected in July on his promise to clamp down on corruption.

Jakarta, London join forces against emissions

Jakarta (The Jakarta Post)-The British Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change, Joan Ruddock, and Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo launched a “British Embassy Act on Copenhagen” campaign on Wednesday.

Ruddock said the United Kingdom and Indonesia shared something in common when it came to understanding the impact of climate change and the two countries could work together.

“We can assist and share experience from local government and contribute to the global reduction of carbon emissions,” she said.

London, she added, like Jakarta, was built below sea level, forcing the government to build expensive infrastructure in order to create a flood barrier to protect the city.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned the world needs massive emissions cuts to reduce atmospheric CO2 concentration levels to prevent average global temperatures from rising by an additional 2 degrees Celsius.

Ruddock said the campaign would include stickers attached to the TransJakarta buses and bajaj (three wheeled taxis) to encourage people who use private cars to take public transportation.

“We all want to use cars, but if we can reduce our dependance on cars and use public transport, it will save energy and improve air quality,” she said.

She said the message was also spread in the UK because 42 percent of the country’s emissions are attributed to homes and personal transport.

Meteor shower 'fails to impress'

Jakarta(BBC News)-Stargazers who stayed up throughout the night to witness what was expected to be an intense meteor shower were left disappointed.

The Leonid meteor shower, the best views of which were to have been from Asia, was largely obscured by cloud.

The shower was caused by tiny high-speed particles from the tail of Comet 55 P/Tempel-Tuttle, which was last in the vicinity of the Earth in 1998.

Nasa had projected there would be up to 300 meteors raining down every hour.

On a typical night there are about eight per hour. In many of the viewing hotspots, however, hopeful visitors were let down by the weather.

Reports from the Philippines, Nepal and India were of cloudy conditions blocking a view of the night sky.
Schoolchildren in Sonipat, India, covered up to watch the shower

But there were a few stories of stargazing success.

Up to 1,000 people who camped out in a car park on the outskirts of Bangkok in Thailand spotted 52 meteors over several hours.

One group of amateur astronomers in India at the Siriska wildlife sanctuary, south of New Delhi reported counting 78 during a four-hour period.

"There was no moon in the sky, which is good for observation," Yogeshwar Kanu Aggarwal, a member of the Space Science Popularization Association of Communications and Educators, told the Associated Press news agency.

"We could see flashes of light for almost 10 seconds as bright as star Sirius."

North American observers stayed up from the early hours of the morning until dawn on Tuesday 17 November to view the shower's peak.

Lapan to launch Orari satellite next year

Jakarta (ANTARAnews) - The National Space and Aviation Agency (Lapan) and the Indonesian Radio Amateurs Organization (Orari) is set to launch an Orari satellite in 2010, the organization`s chief Sutiyoso said.

Orari played a bigger role in keeping the Unitary Republic of Indonesia intact through broad and strong communication networks, he said when installing the executive board of Orari chapter in South Kalimantan on Friday.

Aware of the greater role, the former Jakarta governor said Orari is cooperating with Lapan to launch an Orari satellite to expand its networks to remote areas in the country.

"Communication does not guarantee victory in a battle. But it is difficult to win a battle without communication. That`s why Orari plays a greater role in fostering land, sea and air communications," he said.

In fact, Orari had so far served as an alternative communication means in case of massive disasters in the country, he said referring to an 8.9-magnitude undersea earthquake and the subsequent tsunami devastating Aceh on December 26, 2004 when all communication means were paralyzed for a few days.

Orari was the only communication means in the region at that time to report any developments to the rest of the country, he said.

He said Orari once again became the only alternative communication means when a powerful earthquake rocked West Sumatra province on September 30 this year.
Orari was a big and solid organization although it never relied on government financial assistance, he said.(*)

Seandainya Ibukota RI Dipindah Dari Jakarta

Include us in decision-making, say drivers

Jakarta (The Jakarta Post)-Around 100 drivers of three-wheeled bemo staged a protest in front of City Hall on Friday morning, demanding the transportation agency halt the raids that were recently conducted in some areas.

The drivers parked around 50 old rusty bemo along the green strip of the street in front of the building.

Boyo Hidayat, head of the Bemo Drivers Community, said the drivers felt they were being treated unfairly, because the officials confiscated their vehicles without providing them with an alternative solution.

"We welcome a plan to replace bemo with new vehicles, but please start to phase in the new vehicle, so we can still earn a living. Don't conduct any raids before we get a replacement," he said to representatives from the transportation agency and the administration.

The drivers conducted the protest following the confiscation of 15 vehicles in Mangga Besar, West Jakarta, last Wednesday.

Boyo said the raids meant the loss of livelihood for around 30 drivers, while hundreds of other drivers were afraid they would be targeted in future raids.

The city has not made any firm decision on the drivers' fate.

Arifin, head of a control unit at the transportation agency, told the drivers he could not guarantee the agency would immediately cease the raids, claiming he was not authorized to make such a decision.

He said he would convey the drivers' concerns to the agency head.

Meanwhile, city secretary Muhayat said the city was still discussing the model of three-wheeled vehicle that would replace the bemo.

"Bemo will be replaced by a natural gas-powered three-wheeled vehicle. The rollout will be the same as the replacement program for bajaj *another three-wheeled vehicle*," he said.

Muhayat said the administration would wait until the bemo owners were financially ready before starting the program.

He said the raids were not intended to wipe bemo from the streets, but were conducted because many bemo were not properly licensed.

Edi Saidi, a community organizer and advocacy official at the Urban Poor Consortium (UPC), said he was concerned with the drivers' anxiety, and expressed his fear that a clash would erupt in the next raid.

Once a lucrative mode of transport, the Japanese bemo, which has been in the country since 1968, was phased out by the administration in 2003. Despite the ban, it is still possible to spot the odd seven-passenger bemo plying some parts of the city, including Bendungan Hilir, Karet in Central Jakarta, and Grogol in West Jakarta.
