Jakarta (ANTARAnews) - The National Space and Aviation Agency (Lapan) and the Indonesian Radio Amateurs Organization (Orari) is set to launch an Orari satellite in 2010, the organization`s chief Sutiyoso said.
Orari played a bigger role in keeping the Unitary Republic of Indonesia intact through broad and strong communication networks, he said when installing the executive board of Orari chapter in South Kalimantan on Friday.
Aware of the greater role, the former Jakarta governor said Orari is cooperating with Lapan to launch an Orari satellite to expand its networks to remote areas in the country.
"Communication does not guarantee victory in a battle. But it is difficult to win a battle without communication. That`s why Orari plays a greater role in fostering land, sea and air communications," he said.
In fact, Orari had so far served as an alternative communication means in case of massive disasters in the country, he said referring to an 8.9-magnitude undersea earthquake and the subsequent tsunami devastating Aceh on December 26, 2004 when all communication means were paralyzed for a few days.
Orari was the only communication means in the region at that time to report any developments to the rest of the country, he said.
He said Orari once again became the only alternative communication means when a powerful earthquake rocked West Sumatra province on September 30 this year.
Orari was a big and solid organization although it never relied on government financial assistance, he said.(*)
